Galle Fort
The Galle Dutch Fort is a rare historical jewel protected by dark, thick stone walls with the endless ocean on one side. The roads inside the Galle Fort have hardly changed, like the squares on a chess board crisscrossing in regular patches. Straight and narrow lanes branch in and out inviting the visitor to a delightful walk into the 17th century.
Ancient monuments within this historical complex included the Lighthouse, the clock tower, the first Dutch Reformed and Anglican churches, the Meera Mosque, the Buddhist Temple, and the Commander’s Residence. When it comes to fortified towns, nothing can compete with the Dutch Fort in Galle.Today, inside the Fort you will find that it exudes old-world charm. Within the ramparts and stonewalls of the old Galle Fort – which spreads over a 36-hectare peninsula — magnificent buildings remain. The narrow streets are dotted with Dutch colonial villas and there's a welcome absence of vehicular traffic. There are several museums and antique shops that display curiosities from the island's colonial era. Of the many colonial buildings, perhaps the most absorbing is the Dutch Reformed Church, containing ornately carved memorials to the city's Dutch settlers.
In the fort area, many buildings are of Dutch vintage with street names also in Dutch. Some of the important heritage monuments in the fort are the Dutch Reformed Church, with its historic belfry dated 1707 and cast in 1709, which rang every hour.
Gem
Sri Lanka the Gorgeous Pearl of The Indian Ocean is not only a beautiful Island nation veiled by the “Endless Sheets of Heaven” , The Magnificently Picturesque Nation is a “Treasure Island”, enriched with the astonishing splendor of vividly coloured bewitching gem stones that glitter to outshine the twinkling stars of a cloudless night.
Little has changed since Marco Polo’s time. Such references reflective of the Historical Heritage and Grand Antiquity of the Srilankan Gem Industry has indeed catalysed the Iconic Recognition of the “Ceylon Sapphire” as the Premium Coloured Stone of the World.
The “Mahavansa”, the great historical chronicle of Ceylon whose authority is undoubted, refers to the singular reputation of this island for its “Wealth in Gems”. Precious Gemstones recovered from the shimmering belly of Sri Lanka have donned the Crowns, Thrones & Tiaras of many Emperors including the British Monarchy.
Tea
Tea is serious business in Sri Lanka. Formerly a British colony known as Ceylon, this small Indian Ocean island is famed for producing the finest black tea in the world, grown and produced according to uncompromising, traditional methods and standards
Sri Lanka may be small, but its beautiful, rolling Hill Country contains almost endless stretches of tea plantations , and their fragrant leaves mean you'll never be far from an exceptional cup. For a relaxing (and caffeine-steeped) holiday, then, it's hard to do better than these five gorgeous tea plantation hotels. The ambiance is natural, the pace tranquil, and the tea in Sri Lanka? Exceptional, of course.
Sri Lanka, is the birthplace of Ceylon tea. The humidity, cool temperatures, and rainfall of the country's central highlands provide a climate that favors the production of high-quality tea. Tea production is one of the main sources of foreign exchange for Sri Lanka.Ceylon tea is divided into three groups: High or Upcountry (Udarata), Mid country (Medarata), and Low country (Pahatha rata) tea, based on the geography of the land on which it is grown.
Silk Factory
Besides its luxurious softness and lustrous beauty, there are benefits of silk that other fabrics, whether natural or man-made, simply cannot match. These advantages of silk have rightly earned silk its reputation as the queen of fabrics. If "Why Silk?" is still a question in your mind, the following benefits of silk should remove any doubts. Because of its natural protein structure, silk is the most hypoallergenic of all fabrics. An all-climate fabric, silk is warm and cozy in winter and comfortably cool when temperatures rise. Its natural temperature-regulating properties give silk this paradoxical ability to cool and warm simultaneously. Silk garments thus outperform other fabrics in both summer and winter. Silk worn as a second layer warms without being bulky. Silk takes color well, washes easily, and is easy to work with in spinning, weaving, knitting, and sewing.
Snake Farm
Just past Weligama, and about 12 km north of Mirissa, is a snake farm. That’s a bit of a misnomer, however. It’s not really a farm. There’s no crazy guy breeding crazy snakes with other crazy snakes to create crazier snakes. It’s really a small snake conservatory. But don’t let its size fool you. It is a fantastic place to get up and close with some of Sri Lanka’s most exciting critters outside of the Parliament.
